Morguloff’s lawsuit includes a letter that Baylor gave Duntsch the day he resigned, asserting that Duntsch had no outstanding investigations or restrictions at Baylor. Instead, according to the lawsuits, the hospital let him go quietly. It didn’t report Duntsch to the National Practitioner Data Bank, a database managed by the U.S. l Department of Health and Human Services-even though hospitals are required, by law, to inform the NPPD when they suspend a doctor. She bled to death in the ICU.Īccording to Morguloff’s lawsuit, Baylor didn’t raise a stink about Summers’ paralysis or Martin’s death. In his first surgery after his suspension lifted, he nicked the vertebral artery of Kellie Martin, a 55-year-old Garland woman. According to Morguloff’s lawsuit, Summers woke up from surgery a quadriplegic he told Baylor’s ICU staff that Duntsch had been up using drugs all night.īaylor suspended Duntsch for a month. A month after Morguloff woke up in agony, Duntsch operated on Jerry Summers, his best friend and former roommate. The striking thing about Duntsch’s relationship with Baylor Plano is just how tolerant the hospital was of his behavior-according to the lawsuits, he literally had to kill someone to get fired. Passmore suffers from constant pain and, according to his suit, can’t “lift objects of any significant weight.” Efurd and Fennell allege in their lawsuits that they sustained severe nerve damage. (He failed.) Morguloff’s complaint cites the case of another patient-one of Duntsch’s first at Baylor-who he left unattended in the recovery room while he went to Las Vegas.Īccording to his attorneys, Morguloff will walk with a cane for the rest of his life. Their stories have the trappings of farce: For example, when Duntsch operated on Passmore, a Collin County medical examiner, in December 2011, the surgery went so badly that the assisting surgeon grabbed Duntsch’s surgical instruments and tried to force him to stop, according to Passmore’s lawsuit. The lawyers representing Morguloff, Kenneth Fennell, Mary Efurd and Leroy Passmore are coordinating their cases, arguing that Duntsch was dangerous and Baylor should have stopped him from operating on them. In March, Barry Morguloff-along with three other plaintiffs in related suits-sued the Baylor Health Care System in federal district court in Dallas. Six months later, a doctor at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas found that Duntsch had installed the spinal hardware wrong and left bone fragments in the nerves of Morguloff’s back, requiring another round of surgery to remove them. Morguloff says he woke up with agonizing pain in his left leg Duntsch prescribed him painkillers and told him the pain would go away. Duntsch, he later wrote, didn’t seem to have any understanding of spinal anatomy. Randall Kirby, a prominent Dallas surgeon who assisted Duntsch in the surgery, compared Duntsch’s technique to that of a first-year medical student. Morguloff’s surgery, a spinal fusion, didn’t go well. When steroid injections didn’t work, his doctor referred him to the hospital’s new surgeon: Christopher Duntsch. In January 2012, Barry Morguloff, a 45-year-old Dallas man, went to his doctor at Baylor Regional Medical Center of Plano, complaining of back pain. Into this maelstrom strode Bill Murray, a Saturday Night Live regular at the time who was only penciled in for a small role in the movie. If the call to show up on set was for 7 a.m., Ted was there at 6:45. “People were trying to make a good movie, and that was just the culture at the time. “Nobody was trying to rip off the studio and get high,” says O’Keefe. And Cindy Morgan recalls one afternoon when she saw Doug Kenney running down the hallway of the motel yelling, “The eagle has landed the eagle has landed! Get your per diems in cash, the dealer’s here!” By the time you think you have a problem, you’re half dead.”īrian McConnachie, a National Lampoon mainstay who’d been cast in a small role in the film, remembers how nervous certain people would get when their dealers didn’t arrive on time. … At that time, I was taking it and I didn’t feel that I had a problem. “It always seemed that I could drink more and do more drugs than anybody else and still appear straight. We just knew that we had money to spend and it was a great high,” Chase said later. “At the time we didn’t know it was addictive. Those of us that did it got sucked into the whole bacchanalian rave of it, and believe me when I tell you we went as mad as any of the ancient Greeks.”Ĭhevy Chase, who has talked openly in the past about his own addiction and recovery, said that cocaine just always seemed to materialize on the set of Caddyshack. No one thought anything was wrong about it. People would come into your dressing room with salt shakers and it would be lunch and someone would say, ‘Do you want to do a line?’ ‘Yeah, sure!’ It was no big deal. Michael O’Keefe calls his eleven weeks in Florida “a permanent party.” “Cocaine was everywhere,” he says. PODCAST: Caddyshack book author Chris Nashawaty explains how he got Bill Murray to talk. Pure, like they had just beaten it out of a leaf in Colombia and somebody had carried the leaf to us and turned it into powder in front of us just so we knew how pure it was.” “I would never recommend drugs to anyone,” says Mitchell. And because of the shoot’s Florida location, the coke that was being delivered was of the highest quality. Hamilton Mitchell, who played the caddie named Motormouth, says he was initially shocked to see that cocaine use on the set of Caddyshack was so brazen and public. It seemed to be the fuel that kept the film running. Recreational use that started by the gram turned into binges indulged by the ounce. As the three-months shoot went on, coke use on the film would escalate. Although he stuck mostly to drinking and smoking pot, Berkrot says that the sight of coke was hard to ignore at the Rolling Hills motel, where the cast was staying. “I had never seen cocaine before I got to the set of Caddyshack,” he says. He wasn’t sheltered, exactly, but he certainly had never been exposed to the sort of Hollywood decadence he was about to discover in Florida. Or, in this case, a perfect blizzard.īefore he would find himself on the business end of a rusty pitchfork courtesy of Bill Murray in the film’s indelible Dalai Lama scene, Peter Berkrot, cast as caddie Angie D’Annunzio, was a 19-year-old wannabe theater actor from Queens. That, combined with the studio’s hands-off, go-make-your-movie-without-interference ethos, made the film a perfect storm. But the fact that coke fiend Doug Kenney was the producer of Caddyshack turned those checks and balances into a joke. On most movie sets, the open consumption of hard drugs would be prevented by layers of responsible and experienced middle-aged producers and representatives from the studio on the set. Classroom 3D printing that scales to your classroom needs According to Gideon Wells, the secretary of the navy, the president moved toward blanket emancipation because of the Union’s military defeats and the failure of his plans for compensated emancipation in the Border States. In July 1862, he raised the issue with his cabinet. By freeing the slaves in the rebelling states, which he considered still part of the union, he hoped to undermine their ability to wage war. In spite of these concerns, Lincoln increasingly saw emancipation as a military necessity. Such criticism could easily undermine the effort to preserve the union. If he moved too fast on emancipation, then Democrats, who favored a more limited war, might begin to criticize his war-related policies. Lincoln also had to devise a policy that would not increase anti-war sentiment in the North. In 1862, the president sent Congress a measure to enact his proposal, but most Republican members opposed compensation, so the bill died. Lincoln believed voluntary acceptance of emancipation would have better long-term results than a forced arrangement. If successful, the plan would serve as a model for reconciling the rebelling states to the Union. So initially, he supported gradual compensated emancipation in the Border States. In other words, Lincoln had to pursue a policy on emancipation that would not drive the Border States toward secession. By 1864, Congress actively sought to challenge Lincoln for control of the process of reunifying the nation.Īs Abraham Lincoln approached the interrelated questions of emancipation and reconstruction, he needed to balance the Union’s political and military goals. At the same time, the Congressional Republicans did not always approve of the president’s approach. Therefore, Lincoln developed a policy for restoring the rebelling states that took into consideration the transition from a slave labor system to a free labor system. Moreover, it meant when southern states, either by choice or by force, returned to the Union, they had to accept abolition. However, the Emancipation Proclamation, coupled with Union victories, contributed to the disintegration of slavery. They did not develop a long-term policy for dealing with the former slaves. Initially, his administration focused on the military uses of black labor in the Confiscation Acts. Lincoln struggled to find a policy that would meet the demands of the refugees for freedom while also placating the needs of Border State slaveholders. As the war progressed, it became necessary for the government to adopt a more standard policy. At first, the Lincoln administration allowed individual commanders to determine how to handle the runaway slaves. For the remainder of the war, these “contrabands of war,” as Butler called them, continued to flock to Union lines. However, General Benjamin Butler, at Fortress Monroe in Virginia, decided to put the slaves to work for the Union cause once the war broke out. Initially, Union leaders returned the slaves, pursuant to the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. Slowly, a small number of slaves made their way to Union forts and camps seeking refuge. \)īefore the Civil War began, rumors spread in many southern communities that Abraham Lincoln planned to free the slaves. When he was 17, Beck grew fascinated after hearing a Mississippi John Hurt record at a friend's house, and spent hours in his room trying to emulate Hurt's finger-picking techniques. Growing up in a predominantly Latin district, he found himself the only white child at his school, and quickly learned how to breakdance. The first contemporary music that made a direct connection with Beck was hip hop, which he first heard on Grandmaster Flash records in the early 1980s. During his teens, Beck discovered the music of Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, and X, but remained uninterested in most music outside the folk genre until many years into his career. Beck obtained his first guitar at 16 and became a street musician, often playing Lead Belly covers at Lafayette Park. Īfter his parents separated when he was 10, Beck stayed with his mother and brother Channing in Los Angeles, where he was influenced by the city's diverse musical offerings-everything from hip hop to Latin music and his mother's art scene-all of which would later reappear in his work. He also spent time in Europe with his maternal grandfather. Since his paternal grandfather was a Presbyterian minister, Beck grew up influenced by church music and hymns. He was sent for a time to live with his paternal grandparents in Kansas he later remarked that he thought "they were kind of concerned" about his "weird" home life. He remembers "By the time we left there, they were ripping out miles of houses en masse and building low-rent, giant apartment blocks." The working-class family struggled financially, moving to Hoover and Ninth Street, a neighborhood populated primarily by Koreans and Salvadorian refugees. As a child he lived in a declining neighborhood near Hollywood Boulevard. īeck was born in a rooming house near downtown Los Angeles. Beck's maternal grandmother was Jewish he has said that he considers himself Jewish because he was "raised celebrating Jewish holidays". Beck's maternal grandfather, artist Al Hansen was of Norwegian descent and was a pioneer in the avant-garde Fluxus movement. She moved to California at age 17 and met David Campbell there. Bibbe Hansen grew up amid Andy Warhol's The Factory art scene of the 1960s in New York City and was a Warhol superstar. Beck is a four-time platinum artist he has collaborated with several artists and has made several contributions to soundtracks.īeck was born Bek David Campbell in Los Angeles on July 8, 1970, the son of American visual artist Bibbe Hansen and Canadian arranger, composer, and conductor David Campbell. Two of Beck's most popular and acclaimed recordings are Odelay and Sea Change, both of which were ranked on Rolling Stone 's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. With a pop art collage of musical styles, oblique and ironic lyrics, and postmodern arrangements incorporating samples, drum machines, live instrumentation and sound effects, Beck has been hailed by critics and the public throughout his musical career as being among the most idiosyncratically creative musicians of 1990s and 2000s alternative rock. His fourteenth studio album, Hyperspace, was released on November 22, 2019. His 2017 album, Colors, won awards for Best Alternative Album and Best Engineered Album at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards. The Information in 2006 was inspired by electro-funk, hip hop, and psychedelia 2008's Modern Guilt was inspired by '60s pop music and 2014's folk-infused Morning Phase won Album of the Year at the 57th Grammy Awards. The soft-acoustic Sea Change in 2002 showcased a more serious Beck, and 2005's Guero returned to Odelay 's sample-based production. He released the country-influenced, twangy Mutations in 1998, and the funk-infused Midnite Vultures in 1999. Odelay, released in 1996, topped critic polls and won several awards. Returning to Los Angeles in the early 1990s, he cut his breakthrough single " Loser", which became a worldwide hit in 1994, and released his first major album, Mellow Gold, the same year. He moved to New York City in 1989 and became involved in the city's anti-folk movement. He has released 14 studio albums (three of which were released on indie labels), as well as several non-album singles and a book of sheet music.īorn and raised in Los Angeles, Beck grew towards hip hop and folk in his teens and began to perform locally at coffeehouses and clubs. He has musically encompassed folk, funk, soul, hip hop, electronic, alternative rock, country, and psychedelia. He rose to fame in the early 1990s with his experimental and lo-fi style, and became known for creating musical collages of wide-ranging genres. Rad Na is a popular dish in Thailand but here in the states I rarely see this dish on Thai menus. I'm using jumbo shrimp as my protein and some mixed vegetables. We suggest coming here whenever you want excellent Thai noodles on a budget but can't be bothered to wait for a table or skim through a menu that's a hundred items long.Rad Na or Lad Na, is a comforting Thai dish of wide rice noodles covered in savory gravy. Though it's the only street noodle vendor we know of popping up every night in Thai Town, Rad Na Silom is more than just a novelty. Of course, it all smells ten times better late at night after you’ve had a few cocktails at nearby Harvard & Stone. The ambiance here is one of a kind: As you listen to the roar of wok burners and melodramatic Sam Smith covers playing on the sound system, you'll be hit with various appetizing odors-fish sauce, seared pork, and fried eggs-as each dish is cooked to order. Later, you'll see groups of seven having a bite after a successful happy hour and maybe one person in sweatpants picking up some mango sticky rice (the lone dessert) to go. Earlier on, you'll usually see families, students, and software engineers talking on work calls between mouthfuls. The crowd tends to vary between early evening and when the last orders are served around midnight. All the dishes here go for a reasonable $10 each, though we do wish the portions were a little larger-don't expect the mountainous piles of pad thai you might pay more for at one of the neighborhood’s many sit-down Thai restaurants. If noodles aren't your thing, there's a single eggy fried rice on the menu, too. Some, like the pad thai topped with bean sprouts and dried shrimp, get vigorously stir-fried in the wok, while others are smothered in a silky rad na gravy. Rad Na Silom is cash only and ordering is pretty straightforward: there are just eight dishes to choose from, made with either flat or thin rice noodles. It's a quick, convenient spot that makes some of the city's best pad thai and pad see ew while you wait curbside. with a line of tables and a wok station that cranks out stir-fried dishes in minutes. Starting around 5pm each night, this Thai noodle vendor sets ups outside Silom Supermarket in Thai Town, transforming a half-block of Hollywood Blvd. Like a puppy adoption at a weekend farmers market, Rad Na Silom attracts a crowd. |
